Fuel Bank Foundation has been chosen to receive a share of a major new funding programme to support households that are struggling with energy costs.

National Grid’s £13.8 million ‘Grid for Good Energy Affordability Fund’ will provide £3.5 million per year, for three years, to charities and organisations offering immediate financial relief to vulnerable households in the UK. The remaining £3.3 million will be donated to similar organisations in the US.

Along with Fuel Bank Foundation, the first £1.2 million of UK funding will be allocated to Affordable Warmth Solutions, National Energy Action and National Energy Foundation.

Matthew Cole, CEO of Fuel Bank Foundation, said: “We are extremely grateful for National Grid’s continued support. This funding is essential in helping us provide vital services to the most vulnerable in society, ensuring they do not have to live without heat, light, or power when they cannot afford to top up their prepayment meters.

“Additionally, this support enables us to provide heated throws to Fuel Bank clients to help keep people warm and reduce heating bills. Heated throws are a more cost-effective way to keep warm as they cost very little to use. Research shows that the typical home could save around £300 per year by using an electric throw, rather than heating the whole house.”

Komie Jain, global head of social impact and community engagement at National Grid, said: “Many families continue to face difficult choices when it comes to their energy bills, and we are determined to play our part in alleviating the financial strain. While immediate relief is vital, our vision extends beyond that. Our aim is for the fund to also support households with longer-term efficiency solutions, providing financial benefits for years to come.”

The Grid for Good Energy Affordability Fund builds on the previous support National Grid provided to charity partners to help tens of thousands of vulnerable households with energy advice, emergency funding and energy efficiency measures.

“National Grid has been one of our key funding partners since 2021,” said Matt. “This most recent funding will help us provide support 9,400 people across England and Wales who would otherwise have been living without heat, light and power.”

“Sadly, we are still seeing record numbers of people being referred to us for crisis support and energy prices look set to remain stubbornly high for the foreseeable future. National Grid’s funding has been—and continues to be—crucial to our work. It allows us to provide immediate relief through same-day emergency fuel vouchers, restoring heat and power to homes, while also offering practical help and advice to prevent households falling into fuel crisis in the future.”
