Following today’s news that Lord Frank Field has passed away, aged 81, Matthew Cole, head of Fuel Bank Foundation, pays tribute to the long serving MP and campaigner for social justice and equality.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Lord Field. Frank was instrumental in setting the vision for Fuel Bank and its subsequent creation. He clearly articulated what life was like for his constituents, where rationing energy is a daily occurrence, but at the same time was so positive about the changes that could, and should, be made.

"So very passionate about the people of Birkenhead and the Wirral (and the clear social needs that were ever-present) he was the driving force behind one our first Fuel Bank centres there. But he was also adamant that what had been developed shouldn't just sit on Merseyside. His promotion and encouragement of Fuel Bank led to our expansion across the UK, often working alongside Feeding Britain (Frank's other passion).

“Birkenhead was Fuel Bank’s fourth centre. Over 750 now exist and we have supported over 1.5m people – this would not have happened without Frank’s drive, support and counsel.”
